Maryland’s augmented estate statute, which took effect last October, expanded the reach of the elective share to include virtually all property and interests passing at the death of a spouse. Alex Tanouye, Esq., will discuss how the augmented estate statute works in determining the elective share, what this new regime means for estate planning advisors across all disciplines, and the nettlesome problems that particular assets or property interests can cause in an elective share situation.
Speaker Biography:
Alex S. Tanouye, Esq., is Senior Vice President & Senior Trust Advisor in the Washington, D.C. office of Northern Trust. Alex counsels clients in the development and implementation of sophisticated estate plans, collaborating with their estate planning lawyers and tax professionals to provide comprehensive, holistic advice regarding trusts, estates, wealth transfer & fiduciary income taxation, and Northern Trust’s fiduciary services. He joined Northern Trust after 13 years in private practice, which was focused exclusively on trust and estate law, wealth transfer taxation, fiduciary income taxation, and fiduciary litigation.
Alex is a Member-at-Large of the Maryland State Bar Association Estate & Trust Law Section Council, and Immediate Past President of the Estate Planning Council of Montgomery County, Maryland. He also serves as Co-Chair of the ABA – RPTE Section Committee on Non-Tax Issues Affecting the Planning and Administration of Estates. Alex is author of the ACTEC State Survey on Surviving Spouse’s Rights to Share in Deceased Spouse’s Estate. His past speaking engagements include the ABA – RPTE Spring Symposia / National CLE Conference, the ACTEC Mid-Atlantic Regional Meeting, the Maryland State Bar Association’s Annual Meeting, and numerous continuing legal education seminars for the Maryland and D.C. bar associations.
Alex received his bachelor’s degree with honors from the University of Maryland, College Park, where he was elected to membership in Phi Beta Kappa. He earned his J.D. from the University of Maryland (Carey) School of Law, and a Certificate in Estate Planning from the Georgetown University Law Center. Alex served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1994 through 2002, ultimately attaining the rank of Sergeant (E-5) before being honorably discharged. He is most proud of his wife, Daphne, a hard-working and talented veterinarian, and their two young sons, Otis and August. An avid guitarist for over 30 years, Alex performs regularly (during normal times) in DC-area bars and other small venues as a member of a several local bluegrass and Americana bands.
