Program Description and Benefits:
Think you know everything there is to know about when, whether and how to file a gift tax return (IRS Form 709)?  Think again!  Sarah Johnson will review many of the common mistakes that attorneys and accountants make in preparing gift tax returns and how to correct them, along with tips to position your client in the best possible light with the IRS.  The presentation will include:

  • Lesser known rules for gift-splitting between spouses
  • Reporting formula gifts and gifts subject to Crummey withdrawal rights
  • Adequate disclosure rules, especially where valuation discounts have been taken
  • Whether you really need to report charitable gifts
  • Allocation of the GST exemption, and opting out of automatic allocation

Speaker Biography:
Sarah Moore Johnson is a founding partner of Birchstone Moore LLC.  Her practice concentrates on estate planning, estate and trust administration, business succession planning and charitable giving.  Sarah is a leader in the estate planning community, having served as Chair of the DC Bar Tax Section’s Estate Planning Committee, Secretary of the DC Bar’s Estates, Trusts and Probate Law Steering Committee, and currently as a Committee Chair and Board member of the Washington, D.C. Estate Planning Council.  Sarah is a Fellow in the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) and has been recognized as a Top Estate Attorney in the Washingtonian magazine.  She is a frequent speaker at the local and national level, and a graduate of Wake Forest University and the University of Georgia School of Law.
